In 2005, just weeks before our first child was born, we both got made redundant. With no safety net, we took a leap and launched our first business—an online maternity store called Funky Bump. Competing against major retailers, we had to figure out digital marketing on our own. Turns out, we were pretty good at it.

We scaled Funky Bump into the #1 ranked maternity site in the UK. That journey taught us how small businesses can punch far above their weight when they use the right tools and focus on what works.

Why We Started Beacon.University

As AI tools like ChatGPT exploded onto the scene, we noticed a gap:

Small business owners were interested—but overwhelmed.

Most training was made for tech people, marketers, or large teams. Nobody was teaching AI in a way that made sense for the average business owner with limited time and zero bandwidth.

So we built Beacon University to change that.
